What Does Active Today Mean on Hinge? The Simple Answer
Active Today means Hinge is showing that a person has had recent activity on the app. Use it as a recency clue, not a message clue.
Default read: the person has used Hinge recently. It does not tell you whether they saw your message, ignored you, are chatting with someone else, or are interested in you.
Hinge says Last Active may show “Active Now” or “Active Today” next to a member’s profile photo. Hinge Help Center
Active Today vs Active Now
| Label | Simple meaning | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Active Now | Very recent activity | They are probably currently or very recently in the app |
| Active Today | Activity sometime today or recently | Their profile is not stale |
| No activity label | Status may be hidden, unavailable, or not recent | Do not assume anything dramatic |
The key is not to treat the label like a spy tool. It is a blunt activity signal.
Where Hinge activity status appears
Hinge says Last Active is visible when other members view your profile in places like Discover, Standouts, or Likes You, if the feature is enabled. Hinge also says your matches will not see your Last Active status. Hinge Help Center
That last part matters. A lot of people assume a match can open the chat and see that they are Active Today. Hinge’s help page says matches do not see Last Active status in that way.
Who can see it
If your Last Active status is on, other members may see it in profile contexts. If you hide your Last Active status, Hinge says other members cannot see it, and you cannot see theirs. Hinge Help Center
Default read: this is a mutual visibility feature. You do not get to turn yourself invisible while keeping a perfect view of everyone else.
Why you might not see Active Today
You might not see someone’s status because:
- they turned it off;
- they have not been active recently enough;
- you turned off your own Last Active status;
- the profile context does not show it;
- the app interface or region differs.
A missing label is not a verdict. It is just a missing label.
What Active Today can actually tell you
Active Today can be useful in a narrow way:
| You notice | Likely read | Better move |
|---|---|---|
| Profile says Active Today | This is probably a recently used profile | Reasonable to send a Like if interested |
| Match is quiet and you saw activity elsewhere | They are not prioritizing your chat right now | Use a follow-up rule, not a confrontation |
| You never see the label | Status may be off | Focus on actual matches and replies |
| Label disappeared | Status setting or activity changed | Do not spiral |
What Active Today does not tell you
This is the part people overread.
Active Today does not tell you:
- that they saw your message;
- that they ignored you on purpose;
- that they are messaging someone else;
- that they are interested in you;
- that they are available to reply right now;
- that your conversation has priority.
If your real issue is “they are Active Today but not replying,” read Hinge Active Today but Not Replying. That page gives the actual move.
The simple decision rule
If you are looking at Active Today before sending a Like, treat it as a good sign that the profile is not completely stale.
If you are looking at Active Today after someone has not replied, use this rule:
- Less than 24 hours: wait.
- 2–3 days: one low-pressure follow-up is fine if you care.
- No reply after follow-up: move on.
- This happens constantly: check your profile or messaging pattern.
You do not need the activity label to prove intent. You need a sane move.
